Why are the letters on your keyboard in

such a strange order? In 1868,

Christopher Latham Sholes and his

partners made a typewriter in the

United States. In 1873, a company

called E. Remington & Sons began to

build it. The first ones could type

only CAPITAL letters! The Shift key

came in 1878, and the QWERTY order came

with these machines.
