Before 1840, people in Britain often
paid for a letter when it arrived, not
when it was sent. Rowland Hill had a
better idea: the sender would pay
first, with a small sticky stamp. On
May 1, 1840, the Penny Black went on
sale. It cost one penny and showed the
head of Queen Victoria. It was the
first stamp of its kind, and soon the
whole world used stamps.
