The Statue of Liberty stands on an
island in New York Harbor. It was a
gift of friendship from the people of
France to the United States. The French
sculptor Auguste Bartholdi designed it,
and Gustave Eiffel planned the iron
frame inside. Its skin is made of thin
copper. It was brown at first, but over
the years the air turned it green. It
was opened on October 28, 1886.
