In December 1891, a teacher named James
Naismith needed a game his students
could play indoors in the cold winter.
He was from Canada and taught in
Springfield, Massachusetts. He wrote 13
rules and hung 2 peach baskets on the
walls. The first game had 18 players
and ended 1 to 0! The baskets still had
bottoms, so someone climbed a ladder to
get the ball out.
