Mary Anning was born in 1799 in Lyme
Regis, a town by the sea in the south
of England. Her family was poor, and
they sold fossils that they found in
the cliffs. When she was about 12, she
and her brother found the bones of an
ichthyosaur, a sea reptile from long
ago. In 1823 she found the first
complete plesiosaur. You can see her
finds in the Natural History Museum in
London.
