In a spelling bee, children stand up
one by one and spell hard words, letter
by letter. The first National Spelling
Bee in the United States was held in
1925. Only 9 children took part, and
the winner was Frank Neuhauser, age 11.
His winning word was gladiolus, the
name of a flower. Today, hundreds of
children take part every year!
