In AD 122, the Roman emperor Hadrian
ordered a great wall to be built across
the north of Britain. It ran for about
73 miles (117 km), from coast to coast.
Every Roman mile there was a small fort
called a milecastle, where soldiers
lived. Long parts of the wall still
stand today, and people love to walk
along it. Since 1987 it has been a
World Heritage Site.
