Canada's first mosque opened in
Edmonton, Alberta, on December 12,
1938. It was named the Al Rashid
Mosque. A small Arab Muslim community
built it, and a woman named Hilwie
Hamdon helped lead the work to raise
the money. Many years later, the old
building was saved from being knocked
down. In 1992, it opened again in Fort
Edmonton Park, where visitors can still
see it today.
