For years, many people thought no one
could run a mile in under four minutes.
On May 6, 1954, a 25-year-old medical
student named Roger Bannister tried at
a track in Oxford, England. Two friends
ran in front of him to set the pace.
Bannister crossed the line in 3 minutes
59.4 seconds. He did it! Soon other
runners broke the four-minute mark too.
