Fatima al Fihri came to Fez in Morocco
with her family from the city of
Kairouan. When her father died, she
used the money he left her to build a
mosque. She began it in 859 and named
it al Qarawiyyin. It grew into a great
place of learning, and many call it the
oldest university in the world still
open.
